A great range of beautiful country regions are within a day's ride of Melbourne and a two day tour allows plenty of time to appreciate these areas in a way not possible in just one day.

All tours depart from any one of the four designated meeting points around the CBD, or your hotel if it is located in or near the Melbourne CBD. The meeting points are detailed on the Tours & Prices page along with maps and vehicle parking suggestions if applicable. The departure time is at your convenience in line with a flexible schedule that suits you – just advise us of your preference at the time of booking.

All tours will end back at your hotel or the designated meeting point sometime in the late afternoon allowing you to unwind and reflect on an excellent trip away over dinner and a drink!

The GREAT ALPINE ROAD TWO DAY TOUR

This incredibly varied tour takes you through North-Central and North-East Victoria to the beautiful Gippsland region via one of Victoria’s legendary roads: The Great Alpine Road.

Day One

We depart Melbourne CBD via CityLink, Tullamarine Freeway and the Hume Highway heading north out of the city. We make excellent time through North-Central Victoria via the Hume Highway taking in the ever-changing countryside as we head northeast

leaving the hustle of suburbia and industry behind us. We climb up and over the Great Dividing Range and skirt the southern edge of the Goulburn Valley region, stopping for morning tea at Plunkett’s Winery just off the highway in Avenel adjacent to the Strathbogie Ranges.

After morning tea, we continue along the Hume through the wide open spaces of country Victoria before leaving the major highway just after Glenrowan and passing through the Milawa Gourmet Food and Wine region surrounding the towns of Milawa and Oxley. It is here that we stop for lunch at the Milawa Cheese Factory Bakery or Restaurant. Feel free to browse the cheese shop and partake in some cheese tasting or simply take in the beautiful country air and mountain views before we continue the ride to the Great Alpine Road itself.

We join the Alpine Road a few kilometres from Myrtleford before heading through the beautiful town of Bright. Enjoy the spectacular road flowing through lush green fields and the alpine foothills before we begin the climb up Mount Hotham. The air freshens as we ascend the winding road through awesome mountain forest with incredible views across the mountain ranges at every turn. As we ascend above what would be the snowline in winter, the trees give way to alpine grasses and granite. We wind our way up to the summit of Mount Hotham stopping in places to appreciate the views before taking a break in the alpine village itself.

From the summit we begin the descent towards Omeo passing through Dinner Plain. Once again we experience a dramatic change in the landscape as we lose altitude and head into the southern foothills of the alpine region. The descent is flowing and leisurely and we arrive in the beautiful small town of Omeo in the late afternoon. Whilst you check into your overnight accommodation, we unload your luggage whilst you check in and take all of your motorcycle equipment once you have changed. This leaves you free for the evening after a great day on the road!

Day Two

Departing Omeo we head south through the spectacular southern alpine foothills passing through Swifts Creek and on to Tambo Crossing snaking through the valley alongside the Tambo River. Breathtaking views await at every twist and turn as we head out of the hills and into the Gippsland region, passing through Bruthen and on to Bairnsdale for morning tea at the Mitchell River Tavern. A great coffee and perhaps a slice of cheesecake satisfy our appetites until lunchtime.

On departing Bairnsdale, we continue on along the highway to the next large regional town of Sale, home of the Roulettes (the Royal Australian Air Force aerial display team). The drier open farmland of the West Gippsland region gradually becomes greener as we head into the LaTrobe Valley region – the location of Victoria’s coal-fired power stations and open-cut coal mines. Views of the beautiful farmland and the impressive power stations are framed against the backdrop of the Victorian Alpine region and the Strzelecki Ranges.

We exit the highway at Morwell for lunch at the So Swish Café adjacent to the Latrobe Regional Art Gallery. Great coffee and quality food are served at the cafe and feel free to wander through the art gallery if you wish. After a good rest and refreshments, we are ready to continue on towards Melbourne.

The flowing highway takes us through the lush pastures and rolling hills of East Gippsland with great mountain views on the right. The backseat of the GT and the smooth, straight highway are ideal for soaking up the views left and right as we effortlessly cruise towards Melbourne. We bypass Moe, Warrigul and Drouin before ultimately joining the Pakenham Bypass and the M1 for the final leg of the journey into Melbourne city centre.

We exit the freeway at Batman Avenue and head past the Rod Laver Arena and along the Yarra River as we return to your city centre hotel or the designated meeting point. Even though the journey only began the day before, you will feel that you have really experienced a beautiful piece of country Victoria, which you can reflect on as you relax over a drink and dinner!

We depart Dunkeld and head northeast to Halls Gap – the gateway village for visitors to the national park. We stop for a leg stretch in the centre of town before heading up into the hills to visit the iconic tourist spots of Reeds Lookout and the Balconies. The gently curving road through the trees coupled with the crisp mountain air makes for an impressive ride up to the lookouts. After we have taken in the beautiful sights we return to Hall’s Gap for morning tea and a rest at one of the towns beautiful little cafés. After morning tea, we begin our leisurely return to Melbourne along the eastern edge of the park before joining the Western Highway. Fantastic views of the National Park are to be had as we head south along the edge of the park and we stop several times to appreciate the majesty of the mountains as they retreat into the distance behind us.

We stop for lunch at Angel's Cafe in Beaufort. After lunch, we continue on through the Western Plains and passed Ballarat before exiting the Western Highway at Bacchus Marsh and heading to Gisborne for afternoon tea at Roomba's Cafe.

The final leg of the journey to the CBD takes us along the Calder Freeway with some spectacular city views as we descend towards sea level. The efficient CityLink tollway offers some of the best city centre views as we ride the overpass alongside the ever developing Docklands district and over the Bolte Bridge. This first leg of the journey is straight and flat with good views out to the You Yangs Regional Park and Brisbane Ranges National Park. We stop on the Geelong waterfront for morning tea looking out onto Corio Bay. Geelong is an industrial city with many residents commuting to work in Melbourne but it has an attractive waterfront popular with locals and tourists alike at the weekends.

After morning tea at Sailor's Rest, we leave Geelong and continue south to join the Great Ocean Road after Torquay. We then pass through Anglesea and Airey’s Inlet before stopping for a café or pub lunch in Lorne. You can remove all of your motorcycle clothing if you wish and leave it with your riders allowing you to take a stroll along the beach or through the local shops.

After lunch we continue on towards Apollo Bay through more exhilarating scenery. The open ocean views combined with the rugged hillsides of the Angahook-Lorne State Park are best viewed from the back of a motorcycle as there is so much to look at around every turn. Sections of the GOR have many gentle bends that reveal a new and spectacular view around each one and the absence of a roof over your head ensures you don’t miss anything! We stop at scenic lookouts regularly allowing you to stretch your legs and appreciate the incredible views from a standstill.

Cape Otway Lightstation

We arrive in Apollo Bay in the early afternoon and continue on the Ocean Road to visit the Cape Otway Lightstation, located at the southernmost tip of the mainland west of Melbourne, where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait collide and is the location of the Cape Otway Lighthouse, which is mainland Australia’s oldest surviving lighthouse. You can explore the grounds and old buildings and climb the lighthouse itself for stunning views up and down the coast as well as have a great coffee at the cafe whilst enjoying the views of the lighthouse and the ocean.

On departing Cape Otway, we return to Apollo Bay in the mid afternoon allowing you plenty of time to explore the town and beach. Your riders will take care of all of your motorcycle equipment and unload your luggage from the motorcycles upon arrival at your accommodation. The evening is yours to enjoy before another exciting day on the motorcycle begins.

Day Two

The departure time from Apollo Bay is determined by you though we do recommend leaving relatively early to ensure a reasonable return time in Melbourne, giving you a longer relaxing evening back at your home or hotel to unwind after an exciting day.

On the gradual return to Melbourne, we visit the Otway Fly Treetop Walk located in the Otway Ranges National Park. The ride takes us further along the Great Ocean Road and into the magical heritage area old-growth forest. This pristine national park is rich in wildlife such as Kangaroos and Koalas and a multitude of native birds.

Otway Fly Treetop Walk

The Treetop walk is located in the heart of stunning Otway Ranges forest and allows you to literally walk in the forest canopy on a brilliantly engineered suspended metal structure. On arrival at the visitors’ centre, feel free to remove all of your motorcycle equipment and leave it with your riders. You can explore the area at your leisure taking in the beautiful forest floor walks as well as the fly walk and there is a café/restaurant to enjoy coffee, a light snack or lunch.

On leaving Cape Otway or the Otway Fly, we head north through more of the Otway Ranges along beautiful winding roads to Colac for afternoon tea at Duff’s Café adjacent to the Memorial Square before continuing on back to Melbourne via Geelong. We return you to your CBD hotel or the designated meeting point of your choice in the mid to late afternoon, which allows you plenty of time to unwind at the end of a great two days away!
